Some Theorizing: Evidence that the Engineer has been working with Grey
A continuation of this post.
I’d like to note that the engineer has been closely tied to Grey ever since Valve began teasing the possibility of MVM. In fact, it was in the Engineer Update that the concept of robots in TF2 was first introduced. I cite this trailer in particular. Robot heads show up in it twice.
I know that the updates don’t always tie in canonically with the comic, so this could be written off as more of an easter egg, but there are a couple of other things that seem to point towards the engineer’s affiliation with Grey.
The maps cp_foundry and sd_doomsday were released before the MVM update and contained several hints that teased it. Among these were two rooms marked Top Secret and guarded by an NPC soldier. Both rooms could be accessed via noclip. Foundry’s room contained a concerned scout and heavy looking at blurry pictures of the robots.
Doomsday’s secret room had a spy face-palming over a map of what would later be revealed as the locations of the new MVM maps.
In and of themselves, these things are in no way related to the engineer. However, around the same time all this MVM hype was flying around, some people noticed that the TF2 homepage had changed rather subtly.
Three of the mercs’ faces were different.
If the secret rooms from the maps are anything to go by, it was the scout, heavy, and spy that first discovered Grey’s robot army. The unusual thing is that these three have shifted their gaze onto someone that should be completely unrelated to Grey and the robots.
To date, nothing in MVM has explained why the scout, spy, and heavy would be giving the engineer the evil eye, and the website banner still looks like this. It seems like whatever Valve had planned way back when MVM first came out is still in the works, and somehow the engineer is right in the middle of it.
Given that the robot heads were shown in the engineer’s workshop, I’d say that he’s probably been working with Grey since before the robot wars. And given the mistrustful glances of the scout, heavy, and spy, I’d say at least a few of his team already suspect treachery.
So maybe the engineer’s gone missing because he’s busy chasing down a crotchety old woman with his australium roid-rage grandfather and Grey, or maybe this is all too much of a stretch and the next comic update will prove me wrong. It’s hard to say at this point.
This post is amazing. I had no idea about the secret rooms or deeper implications of the
Engineer stinkeye which many people have noted when I stayed up late making off the wall meta with Multiversecafe. I really wonder where this will go, and what kind of arc Valve is planning in regards to The Shadowy Guy Who Bears A Striking Resemblence To Radigan and disappeared Engie. I wonder if this plays into this theory as well. Valve certainly is trying to tell us to look for something in past updates, hmmm.
See: TF2 simultaneously has no plot and the best plot ever.

This Centuries-Old Musical Instrument Sounds Exactly Like Super Mario.
"Listen to this young girl playing her sheng, a Chinese instrument invented thousands of years ago. The woodwind may be ancient, but the sound is pure 1980s nostalgia—it’s the Super Mario Brothers theme, right down to the sounds of Mario collecting coins and mushrooms. Amazing!
Music was a big part of the old school Nintendo experience, and it’s eerie how the notes coming out of an instrument you probably never heard of sound so shockingly familiar. This young musician has certainly put in a ton of practice—clearly, all those hours playing Super Mario have paid off.”
